October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and by now the pink themed items for sale have flooded every retail store. Most of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. The American Cancer Society projects that 1 in 8 women living in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast cancer is the second leading cancer death in women, preceded by lung cancer.
What can you do to prevent cancer? One way to lower your risk for this disease is to focus on a diet rich in plant based foods. A plant-based diet focuses on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, these foods traditionally have less fat and more fiber.
You can start off by replacing one or two of your meals with vegetarian options – visit Meatless Mondays for tips and healthy meat-free recipes. There are plenty of sources of protein for those skipping out on meat. Legumes and lentils help balance blood sugar and maintain weight and energy. Organic soy products provide a healthy protein source that can be added to your meal. Whole grains, nuts and vegetables also provide protein in our diet.
Along with skipping meat at 1-2 meals per week, you can also decrease your consumption of processed foods. Eat foods that resemble their forms in nature. The more that something has been altered, the farther it is from being natural and usually more void of nutrients. Attempt to cook from scratch, start with simple meals and you’ll be in control of what enters your body. This article discusses what a healthful diet should look like.
