Last week while having lunch with a fabulous friend at Lettuce in Walnut Creek, I had gazpacho. Gazpacho is a refreshing Spanish cold tomato soup and the burst of flavors in my mouth transported me back to my days at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. Four of us in my medical school class had a ‘lunch club’ – we would each take turns bringing in lunch for everyone once a week. Summer is in full swing and the list of summer activities to partake in is endless. As we spend more and more time outdoors – we are prone to sunburns if proper precautions are not taken. Last week I put together a treatment plant for a patient who had gotten sunburned, Naturopathic Medicine has many effective first aid remedies! Most Americans enjoy tanning their skin but most of us don’t realize that a tan is evidence that the skin was trying to protect itself from sun damage. Sun damage can lead to premature aging of the skin, eye damage and even skin cancer.
B Vitamins are involved in many metabolic reactions within the human body and they play a key role in skin health, immune and nervous system function, muscle tone and the prevention of anemia. Vitamin B – encompasses a group of 8 vitamins that are found in food items, a supplement or injection that contains these sub-types is called a B Complex. B Vitamins are crucial in the normal functions of our body and prolonged deficiencies can lead to health complications.
One of the ways I work with my patients is by helping them reduce the toxic burden on their bodies. This means we support their liver in removing toxins in their system as well as lower the amount of toxins going into their body. A simple way to avoid toxins is by using non-toxic skin care products. After all, our skin is our largest organ, what we apply topically does get absorbed into our bodies.
