Chamomile is a commonly cultivated herb in Europe and North America. It is a bitter, pungent and cooling herb. Chamomile reduces nervous irritability (anxiety and restlessness), it is calming and gentle and therefore useful for children. Though Chamomile is slow and gentle in action; its effects are long lasting. It is a tonic herb and requires frequent and long term dosing. Chamomile is also useful for people who are restless on trying to fall asleep or people who experience nightmares.
In the gastrointestinal tract – Chamomile is often used to promote healing by restoring and repairing intestinal mucosal integrity. Because it is an excellent smooth muscle relaxant – it is helpful in reducing spasms in the entire GI tract. It is useful in treatment of colic, gastritis and spastic diarrhea. Since Chamomile is a tonic herb – it can be used to treat constipation and diarrhea. It can improve motor function to treat constipation or decrease muscle spasm to treat diarrhea.
The volatile oils in Chamomile are responsible for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-microbial actions. An infusion or steam inhalation is the most effective way to use Chamomile to reduce inflammation or mucous in the upper respiratory tract.
As a wash, Chamomile can be used to treat carbuncles, furuncles and external lesions, by helping to speed the healing process. Use the dried herb to make a paste for a poultice that can be used topically on carbuncles or furuncles.
High dosing of Chamomile is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy.
